As Seen on TV

Hoover Smartwash: An Incredible Carpet Cleaner for Under $200!

We have always had wall-to-wall carpeting in our homes as well as pets with both short and long hair. I have always been amazed at how much dirt and dander they produce even though they are rarely outside except to go to the bathroom. Despite vacuuming at least twice per week, the carpets need cleaning at least two times per year. With other carpet cleaners (rented as well as competing brands owned), I always had to worry that I was not only getting the right mix of detergent to water, but also not to oversaturate the carpet as this can eventually cause the glue on the backing to loosen and the carpet to warp.

When I saw the infomercial on this cleaner, I was skeptical because I have bought so many things "as seen on TV" and been disappointed. However, given the return policy AND the fact that it had the HOOVER name, I decided to take a chance. We had owned Hoover vacuum cleaners over the past 40 years and were always impressed by their innovation as well as performance. I was NOT disappointed when this cleaner arrived. The first thing that impressed me was how compact it is compared to other cleaners that I owned. We have limited closet space in our house and this fits beautifully in the hall closet without taking up a lot of valuable room. I also love the fact that the tools for upholstery are stored in a convenient snap-closed bag that hangs in the closet.

The first time that I used it, it performed exactly as the infomercial described. Fill the cleaning solution cup, fill the water cup, and start cleaning! When you push forward with the cleaner, it dispenses the perfect mix of water and solution. As you draw back, the solution stops and the vacuum picks up the water in the carpet as the dual brushes fluff the nap and pick up any hair or other material. There is also a great little feature button labeled "dry only". This turns off the pump for the water and solution and simply continuously blows heated air downward on the carpet so that it dries very quickly - no more tredding on damp carpeting waiting for it to dry!

The brushes are so well designed. On my previous cleaner (Bissell Pro Heat), the brush was always getting tangled with hair and was a nighmare to clean - I used to have to take scissors to the wound up hair and pray that I didn't cut the bristles. Not so with the Hoover Smartwash - the brushes are designed to minimize hair tangling and are super easy to clean. The final thing that truly impressed me was the cleanup afterwards. On the Pro Heat, I used to have to run the remaining solution out thereby wasting a lot of solution if I overestimated what I needed to finish. Then, the Pro Heat was very difficult to clean and some parts didn't snap off, so they basically stayed disgustingly dirty. The Hoover Smartwash is amazingly easy to clean. Whatever solution is left can be poured right back into the bottle, so there's no waste. The remaining clean water in the tank is easy to empty. Simpy snap off the tank, unscrew the top and pour out the excess water. The "dirty" water tank is just as easy to clean. After you empty it, you can break it down into two parts giving you the ability to clean it completely with no residual dirt or solution.

The best part for me was the area where the brushes are and the dirty water is drawn into the machine - it snaps off exposing the brushes to clean any little bit of hair that may have been picked up. The "funnel" part that suctions the water can be run under a faucet and cleaned perfectly.

I know that I must sound like a commercial for this cleaner, but after having so many different brands in the past 40 years, it was so exciting to find one so well designed and though out that it not only does an incredible job of cleaning the carpets, but also makes cleanup super easy - after cleanup, it looks brand new. I just regret that I hadn't purchased Hoover carpet cleaners before this one, but I am once again sold on the Hoover brand. The designs are so well though out and there are many conveniences built-in to their machines. I expect this carpet cleaner to last for a long time - I have a Hoover canister vacuum that just turned 35 years old and is still going strong. I highly recommend this for anyone who has carpeting in their home or office - whether or not you have pets.
